Obituary and Condolences

 

It is with sadness that the family of Alton "Gary" McKay announce his passing on June 19, 2026.

Gary was born on May 30, 1942, in Kirkland Lake, Ontario. He dedicated 29 years of service to Canada through his work with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, a career marked by professionalism, commitment, and quiet pride in serving his country.

On September 4, 1965, Gary married the love of his life, Laurel (née MacKaracher). Together they shared 61 years of marriage filled with family, laughter, and countless memories.

Gary will be deeply missed by his children Valoree, Shannon, and Ian; his grandchildren Maya and Sam; and his sister Elaine Hamadey. He is predeceased by his sister Donice Cline and his brother Donald Cline.

Gary had a wicked sense of humour and a generous spirit. He loved classic westerns, reading, spending weekends at garage sales in search of antique tools, and hunting down pieces of cranberry glass for Laurel. Some of his happiest moments were spent at the cottage, where he enjoyed the quiet outdoors and could often be found feeding the deer.

An accomplished curler, Gary often represented Ontario at the Canadian National Police Curling Championship. In 1998, the team proudly brought home the national title.

Gary will be remembered with love, laughter, and gratitude by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A celebration of life will be held August 8th, at The Cove Inn in Westport, ON from 2:00 - 4:00 pm. The family request that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Perth and Smith Falls General Hospital.
